Scotland could feature two brothers as their centre pairing from next season as Sione Tuipulotu’s younger sibling Mosese closes in on a move to Edinburgh Rugby.

Glasgow Warriors star Sione, 27, is already a vital figure for national head coach Gregor Townsend given the power and carrying ability he brings to midfield.

But now 22-year-old Mosese could soon feature in a blue shirt alongside him, with Edinburgh very much interested in signing him from the New South Wales Waratahs.

The Tuipulotu brothers were born in Australia but are eligible to play for the Scots through their grandmother, who was born in Greenock.

Mosese, also a centre, last year insisted he was eager to stay with the Waratahs and represent the Wallabies at international level.

But it now looks like he has had a change of heart.

During the last Six Nations, Sione linked up brilliantly with Scotland skipper Finn Russell

The Waratahs’ signing of superstar former rugby league man Joseph Suaalii is set to have a big impact on Mosese’s chances of playing for both them and Australia from next season.

So, from the start of the 2024-25 campaign, he is likely to be playing with Edinburgh in the United Rugby Championship and staking his claim for a Scotland spot.

Townsend has previously spoken directly to Mosese, who has long been on Scottish rugby’s radar given Sione’s performances for his adopted country. Sione already enjoys a productive centre partnership with Huw Jones for both Glasgow and Scotland, to the extent that the pairing have been dubbed ‘Huwipulotu’.

However, should Sione and Mosese eventually play for Scotland together, they would continue a long recent list of siblings to have done so, including Richie and Jonny Gray, Zander and Matt Fagerson and George and Peter Horne.

Speaking in March 2023, Townsend said of Mosese: ‘He’s a player who is interesting one of the pro teams and us in Scotland. Sione’s had such a great impact. It’s wise of Scottish rugby to follow up on someone of real potential.’
