Thousands of music festival fans have gone home disappointed and soaked after the event ended early amid fears of a massive thunderstorm.

More than 20,000 Sydneysiders flocked to the Good Things alternative music festival in Centennial Park on Saturday to enjoy a huge line-up of bands headlined by US groups Limp Bizkit, Fall Out Boy and Devo.

Fall Out Boy were in the middle of their third song when the music suddenly fell silent.

'Bear with us for one second. There's a storm coming in,' the singer explained amid loud boos from the large crowd.

'We're being told we're gonna pause the show for a second. We're hoping to get back real soon.'

'Please be patient, we'll be back.'

A few moments later, the stunned crowd was ordered by an announcer on the PA system to evacuate as the event was over amid fears a thunderstorm rolling in from other parts of the city was about to hit.

More than 20,000 Good Things Festival revellers were ordered to evacuate before the event was supposed to end on Saturday night

'Hail storm coming with large hail stones and lightning,' the announcer stated.

'Could you please orderly evacuate the site. Don't rush and move away from the structures please.'

Festival goers went home disappointed after spending at least $225 on the ticket alone.

Many attendees such as Ash travelled to Sydney just for the event.

'We only got to the third song in Fall Out Boy, the reason my sister and I got tickets, when it was cancelled,' Ash told Daily Mail Australia.

'They came back on a minute later and announced it was cancelled.

'Organisers came on the speakers and asked everyone to evacuate in an orderly fashion due to a large lightning and hail storm.'

'My sister was gutted, she was in tears.

'Really disappointed we didn’t get to see Fall Out Boy but completely understand it’s not their fault, just crappy weather.'

The music festival in Centennial Park ended early amid fears a wild storm was about to hit

The abrupt end sparked chaos as disappointed 20,000 attendees headed towards the single exit gate in the pouring rain.

'It was also a bit scary, we were all trying to go through one chokehold exit, we were terrified of getting trampled if the storm hit,' Ash said.

'Eventually the crowd got stuck because the one small exit was so clogged.

'Some people broke down a fence off to the side and managed to get out there, then it freed up.

'It was just very sudden and confusing.'

She added that there was no thunderstorm, just a massive downpour.

Thousands of attendees had to exit Centennial Park via a single gate

A thunderstorm swept across Sydney, leaving event organisers with no other choice but to end the event early

Other fans took to social media to vent their fury about how matters unfolded.

'I can’t believe i waited the whole day at Good Things Festival to see fall out boy, they came on stage and sung like 2 and a half songs. then it gets cancelled because of a thunderstorm warning,' one tweeted.

Another added 'Fall out boy is a s****y f*****g band for doing TWO US TOURS and only going to the world's worst festival in Australia instead of doing a tour here.'

A third wrote: 'Centennial Park as a site for Good Things is awful for many reasons but getting 20,000 people to evacuate that site for "external cover" with no help from the festival is borderline negligence on their part - it's a 15-20 minute walk for any cover, which itself isn't much.'

The Good Things Festival heads to Brisbane Showgrounds on Sunday.
