The Golden Globes has left fans baffled after new Natalie Portman drama May December was nominated as a comedy.

In addition to the film being nominated in that category, Portman was also selected in the best female actor in the comedy/musical category, along with supporting actors Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.

The film follows an actress Elizabeth (Portman) who travels to Georgia to meet and study the life of the controversial woman Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Moore) she is set to play in a film.

The woman is infamous for her 23-year-old relationship with her husband Joe (Melton) whom she first began a sexual relationship with when he was just 13-years-old. Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, the married couple buckles under pressure when the actress arrives to do research.

Due to the predatorial relationship between Gracie and Joe, fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, are baffled the movie has been put into the comedy category saying they do not find anything about the film funny.

'Did we watch the same May December because that was NOT a comedy in any sense of the word,' said a user named Oti.

A user named Mara said, 'I don’t know what the criteria for a comedy or musical film at the Golden Globes is because May December was not one of those at all.'

'MAY DECEMBER, a film about child grooming and abuse, was submitted as a "Comedy/Musical" at the Golden Globes. Tell me again why we should take the Golden Globes seriously,' said a user named Michael.

Another called Sophie said: 'May December is very very very good despite some heavy handed animal motifs. Julianne Moore is exceptional as ever. BUT idg all of the reviews placing it as a comedy??? What was funny? Natalie Portman’s character, an egotist actress, could have been played for laughs but wasn’t!'

Fans speculated the reason the Golden Globes put the film in the musical or comedy category is because there is too much competition in the drama category.

Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives and The Zone of Interest were nominated for best picture on the drama category.

In the best movie musical or comedy category, Air, American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers, May December, and Poor Things were all nominated.

A user named KJ said, 'I don't understand the whole gist of it but May December is being promoted as dark comedy (I'm told it's a strategy bc drama's got too much competition with Oppenheimer and the Scorsese film).

'We as a species cannot let May December be remembered as a dark comedy,' said a user named Dan.

A minority of voices felt calling May December a dark comedy was the right choice for the movie.

'May December had one of the most hilarious twists of all time and I laughed throughout this film. Comedy placement is fine,' said a user name Mike.

The film has been well received, reaching a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was released on November 17 before streaming on Netflix on December 1 in the US and on Sky Cinema from 8 December in the UK.

The story is loosely based on the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau, who served six years in prison for second-degree rape of her 12-year-old student Vili Fualaau.

The controversial couple eventually married until they separated in 2019. Mary passed away, age 58, from colorectal cancer in 2020.

One of the scenes from May December parallels a shocking interview from Mary and Vili conducted by Matt Doran which aired on Channel Seven's Sunday Night in Australia in 2018.

During the interview, Mary attempted to justify her relationship with Vili much to the horror of Doran who sat across from them.

'Who was the boss? Who was the boss? Who was the boss back then? Who was the boss back then? Who was? Just say,' Mary barked at him.

'This is ridiculous... this is getting weird,' Vili replied, to which Doran agreed, 'This is ridiculous.'

In a scene in May December, Joe confronts Gracie Atherton-Yoo about the origins of their controversial relationship.

'Who was the boss?' Gracie asks him. 'Who was in charge?'
