Fans have heaped praise on Cody Gakpo after his impressive performance in the Netherlands' last-16 win over Romania.

Ronald Koeman's men booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with an emphatic 3-0 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Gakpo opened the scoring after 20 minutes and then got the assist for Donyell Malen's close-range finish seven minutes from time.

The Liverpool star's performance came from the left wing, with Memphis Depay leading the line for Netherlands.

He sent social media into a frenzy and some fans insist the Reds must play him in the same position to get the best out of him next season.

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge posted on X: 'Gakpo is a different player for Netherlands man. Gotta get the best out of him at LFC.'

Meanwhile, one fan said: 'Nahhhh man Cody Gakpo is carrying this country ON HIS BACK!.'

A second wrote: 'Cody Gakpo. He’s a left winger. Case closed,' while a third wrote, 'That goal was all Gakpo again. He’s incredible.'

Gakpo is now the Euro 2024 joint top goal-scorer after his strike against Romania took his tally to three.

The 25-year-old also scored against Poland and Austria in the group stage.

Speaking after the win over Romania, Gakpo said: 'We played a good game and showed a great reaction from the last one and very pleased.

'I agree, after the last game we needed a reaction and today was a good step in the right direction.

'We talked a lot about the aggression and intensity and defending like a team and it was a good step today again and very happy we won and played a good game.'

Netherlands will play the winner of Austria's clash with Turkey in the quarter-finals.
