Snooker fans have heaped praise on Mark Williams for hitting one of the 'best shots of the year'.

The Welsh snooker star, 48, was up against Barry Hawkins in the 2023 Champion of Champions last night as both looked to book their place in the last eight.

However, despite losing 4-0 to Hawkins, Williams managed to produce a moment of excellence.

The Welsh snooker star deliberately missed a pink which was hanging over the pocket to snooker his opponent.

After completing the genius shot, Williams can be seen with a wry smile on his face as he walks back to his chair.

This is the moment Mark Williams brilliantly misses the pink deliberately to set up the snooker

He then returns to his chair with a wry smile on his face, although he later lost the match 4-0

Both the commentators and the audience could not believe what they saw - neither could snooker fans on social media.

One person wrote on X: 'One of the greatest of all time love watching Mark Williams play.'

Another said: 'One of the best shot makers in history. Wonderful player to watch

A third added: 'Outstanding!' while a fourth also said: 'An absolute one-off this fella.'

Lastly, a fan wrote: 'Unbelievable. MW highlight reel is right up there with Ronnie, Trump and Jimmy!'
