Fans have slammed Austria's defending after they conceded less than a minute into their Euro 2024 last-16 clash with Turkey.

Turkey came out of the traps quickly from kick-off and won a corner after Arda Guler's pass to Baris Alper Yilmaz was intercepted by Philipp Lienhart.

Austria failed to clear their lines from the corner and Merih Demiral pounced to finish from close range after just 57 seconds.

And Ralf Rangnick's men, having been lauded for their performances in the group stage, have now come under huge scrutiny from fans on social media.

One said: 'That defending was just terrible. Given how Austria attack games, there should hopefully be a great game coming now'.

Another wrote: '58 seconds gone and Turkiye take the lead. Such a sloppy piece of defending by Austria. Looks like we're got a gem of a football game ahead of us'.

A third posted: 'Austria made a dog's breakfast out of that sequence. Putrid defending on the goal line. They handed Merih Demiral that goal. 1-0 Turkey.'

'Well done Austria, absolutely sensational defending all round,' a fourth fan sarcastically said on X.

Demiral's strike against Austria has made history as it's the second fastest goal in the European Championships history.

The fastest came earlier in this year's tournament when Nedim Bajrami of Albania score agai. st Italy inside 23 seconds.
