Joel Smith's father claims his son is being made a 'scapegoat' in an effort by the AFL to cover up widespread illicit drug use in the sport.

Melbourne star Smith, 28, is at risk of copping a multi-year suspension after he tested positive for cocaine after match for his club in August 2023.

Smith has also been hit with drug trafficking charges amid a Sport Integrity Australia probe.

It has been reported that at least four of Smith's Demons teammates are sweating over the outcome of the trafficking probe, with the SIA uncovering a text message sent by Smith in which he allegedly said he had obtained several grams of cocaine before asking if they were interested.

It is understood that the message was sent to a group of Melbourne stars.

Smith is able to contest his case at an anti-doping tribunal but his father, Shaun, a former player for Melbourne, has claimed his son is being pressured to remain tight-lipped and take the fall in order to prevent a bigger scandal erupting.

'It feels like my son is being manipulated into being the fall guy here, in order to protect the AFL brand,' he told News Corp.

'He's being made a scapegoat, and I'm really worried for him.

'Will they just throw Joel under a bus? Because it looks like that's what's happening.

'The AFL seems determined to cover up the widespread abuse of illegal drugs at some clubs.'

He said he has told his son to seek alternative legal advice to better protect himself.

'Because I've been pushing for another legal opinion, it's really hurt my relationship with Joel,' he said.

'They have driven a wedge between my son and his family.'

'Joel and his lawyers should be telling SIA everything. The truth has to be told,' Smith senior added.

'You don't help your mates by covering for them if they are harming themselves like so many of them are, right now.'
