Footy star Cameron Munster is roasted for fronting a bizarre one-man show - with an entire NRL stadium booked to hold the event

6 months ago 47

Major music festivals like Splendour in the Grass are dropping like flies because of a lack of ticket sales, so it's no wonder footy fans are wondering why event organisers think Storm star Cameron Munster can pack out an entire stadium.

The Melbourne Storm five-eighth will celebrate his 200th NRL match this weekend, a major milestone in a career that has also included 18 appearances for Queensland and 11 Test caps for Australia.

He has also announced the impending arrival of his third child with wife Bianca McMahon.

And now he has been booked for a puzzling event at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on May 25 called Open Air Live.

Munster will play his 200th NRL match for the Melbourne Storm this weekend in a major milestone for the country boy from Rockhampton

It is a big week for Munster, who has also announced that his wife Bianca is expecting their third child

Munster is a popular NRL personality, but fans have questioned whether he has the drawing power to pull off a one-man stadium show

In a tough economic climate, popular Australian music festivals like Splendour in the Grass and Groovin' the Moo have shut down because of poor ticket sales.

However, the event company managing Open Air Live believes Munster is a big enough drawcard to bring in a massive stadium crowd all on his own.

The event is being held by Major Events Live, who hosted the first Open Air Live event in December featuring Matildas stars Alanna Kennedy, Mackenzie Arnold and Caitlin Foord at Sydney's Commbank Stadium.

That event was hot on the heels of the Matildas giant-slaying run at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they shattered attendance records and enjoyed historic levels of support.

Even then, the Matildas stars could only attract a modest crowd with the vast majority of the seats empty at the 30,000 capacity stadium.

Now Munster is hoping to pull a bigger crowd as the headline act of the second Open Air Live event.

The response so far has not been great, with just two people saying they will be attending on Facebook

As of April 30, just two people had confirmed they were attending on Facebook.

And footy fans have started questioning why Munster has been installed as the headline act for a stadium event.

'Surely no one serious is going to this,' one fan posted.

'What's he going to talk about?' asked another.

'Is this like the rugby league version of The Full Monty?' another asked.

To answer the final question, no, there will be no nudity.

Instead it is being marketed as a family-friendly event featuring a variety of entertainment.

The event will be hosted by former NRL star and current NRL360 co-host Braith Anasta and there will also be a live DJ, interactive on-field activities and cheerleaders.

Both Anasta and Kennedy have promoted the Instagram marketing post in a bid to drum up more support.

CommBank Stadium in Sydney was mostly empty when Matildas stars Alanna Kennedy, Mackenzie Arnold and Caitlin Foord were the headliners of the first Open Air Live event

A small but dedicated group of Matildas fans got to see their World Cup heroes run drills against each other and take part in a Q&A session

Fans are questioning how Cameron Munster is going to attract fans to a stadium event if the Matildas were unable to, even after their World Cup heroics

There were issues with the first event as well.

And while the crowd was modest for a stadium event, fans complained that there were too many people for the meet and greet with the Matlidas stars.

'The meet and greet was such a shambles. You sold way too many tickets for that,' one fan posted on Instagram.

'It’s not fair on the players nor on the people who bought them. Took way too long.

'We had young kids who were initially excited but by the time we got to meet them everyone was over it, including the players.'

Fans also complained about delays in receiving professional photos taken at the event with the three Matildas.

'Any updates on the photos ? No response to emails and it's now Friday after saying link will be sent Friday last week, then changed to Wednesday this week and still waiting ? Thanks,' one fan posted.

Organisers then posted they would send them a link.
