Ian Maatsen was forced to cut his luxury holiday in Greece short when he received Ronald Koeman's call to join up with the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old was a surprise omission from the Dutch squad after an impressive six months on loan at Borussia Dortmund, culminating in a Champions League final.

Maatsen was told the news just three days before battling for club football's biggest prize, which resulted in Real Madrid taking home the crown for a record 15th time.

In an effort to get past the bad news, the Chelsea full-back jetted off to Mykonos with his girlfriend, Emely Tuinder, spending time relaxing on a Yacht worth over £500,000.

However, his brief stint in the sun was cut short when Teun Koopmeiners was forced out of Koeman's squad through injury, with the Dutch coach turning to Maatsen to replace him.

Maatsen is yet to be handed his international debut after playing a multitude of games at numerous youth levels.

But many expected him to be involved in the original Netherlands squad after a formidable stint in the Bundesliga with Dortmund.

The left-back joined the German side in January after struggling to nail down a starting place at the Blues.

During his six months in the yellow and black of Dortmund, Maatsen racked up five goal involvements in all competitions from 23 appearances.

He now joins the Dutch squad in Wolfsburg that has endured a tough start to their summer, despite not even taking to the turf yet.

As well as losing Koopmeiners, Koeman's midfield took another blow when Frenkie de Jong was forced to pull out after failing to recover from an ankle problem.

Rather than bringing in another replacement, Koeman has decided to start the tournament with a cut-down squad of 25 players.

Oranje start their Euros campaign against Poland on Sunday, in a group that also contains World Cup finalists, France, and Austria.
