Gary Neville wants Manchester United's hierarchy to show some patience and give Erik ten Hag one 'injury-free season' to prove himself.

There remains a number of question marks around the Dutchman's future at Old Trafford, with United on course for their worst ever Premier League points total with three games remaining.

Ten Hag guided United to third, an FA Cup final and Carabao Cup success in his first season in charge, but has seen his good work unravel this season with a mountain of injuries decimating his squad.

Neville is well aware of the sack talk surrounding Ten Hag but wants to see minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team of Ineos executives give the United boss more time.

'I don't see a suitable replacement for Ten Hag available,' Neville told Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal

'Bayern Munich are struggling to find a replacement [for Thomas Tuchel], others are struggling.

'I think we need to stick with Ten Hag and give him one more season - an injury-free season - to see if United can get back to the standards of last season where they won a trophy and finished in the top four.'

He continued: 'Players and managers have struggled to come to terms with Old Trafford in the last 10 years.

'These players and managers were great when United signed them, so there is something fundamentally wrong that is creating this difficulty. Maybe the new ownership and personnel will allow these players and manager to feel more stable.'

Thomas Tuchel has enjoyed success, but there are known to be concerns over his character

Thomas Tuchel is leaving Bayern Munich and he has shown an appetite to take over at United should the job become available.

There are however some concerns about his character given his fall-outs at Bayern with executives and players.

England boss Gareth Southgate and out-of-work manager Graham Potter are two other names to have been touted.

But Neville is eager to see Ten Hag given a go as part of an overhauled structure.

Ten Hag himself has been bullish about his future, believing that commonsense will prevail when United's owners come to decide his future as manager.

The Dutchman is well aware that his compatriot Louis van Gaal was sacked by United despite winning the FA Cup in 2016, but he claims that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos will understand the chronic injury problems in defence when they sit down to assess his performance at the end of the season.

Asked if the Van Gaal precedent worries concerns him, Ten Hag said on Friday: 'No, I think they (the owners) have commonsense.

'They seen when you have 32 different back lines, when you lose eight centre backs, when we see we don't have a left full-back, they know that will have a negative impact on results.

'But we are still fighting and it's a huge FA Cup final. We are still there, it can be a highlight of the season but we know why we are under-performing.'
