Gloucester star Zach Mercer is considering a return to France after being given a tour of the Toulon training centre this week.
The No8 left a big-money contract in Montpellier last season to pursue his dream of England selection under Steve Borthwick. But despite his impressive individual form for the Cherry and Whites this season, the 26-year-old has been left out of the squad for this summer’s tour of Japan and New Zealand.
Mail Sport understands Mercer is committed to his contract at Kingsholm next season but Toulon are keen to recruit him in 2025. He has three years remaining on his deal, meaning Toulon would need to pay a hefty transfer fee.

Mercer was awarded the prestigious Player of the Year award in the Top 14 after leading Montpellier to their first-ever domestic title. France-based players are ineligible for England selection but Mercer’s return home has not materialised the way he hoped.
Ben Earl, Alex Dombrandt and Tom Willis have all been selected ahead of him, with Mercer not winning an international cap since he was selected by Eddie Jones in 2018.
