A late-night altercation between two men on a Melbourne pier has left one dead.
Detectives arrested a man on the foreshore near Frankston Pier, in the city's south-east, about 6am Saturday just hours after the incident and said they are not looking for anyone else.
Police were called to the site after reports of an assault on the pier which is off Pier Promenade.
When they arrived the found a man unresponsive about halfway along the structure, who died shortly after.
The man in custody has not been charged and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
Police said the two men are understood not to have known each other before the assault.
The area has been cordoned off and forensic police are scouring the crime scene.
