Australian gold medal hope Harry Garside is out of the Olympics after losing in the round of 16.

The boxer had high hopes after winning bronze in Tokyo in 2021 but fell at the first hurdle in Paris, losing 5-0 to Richard Kovacs of Hungary.

And Garside, 27, cut a dejected figure after the bout, looking emotional as Kovacs celebrated his victory.

Garside's medal in Tokyo - Australia's first in 33 years - saw the sport surge in popularity back home.

Australia has a record 12 boxers in Paris aiming to be the country's first Olympic champions in the sport.
