Harry Kane has posted an emotional farewell message to Gareth Southgate after he stepped down as England manager.

Following eight years in charge of his nation, Southgate decided to step away from the role following a Euro 2024 final defeat.

It marks a second European Championship final loss for Southgate as Spain clinched a record-breaking fourth.

Kane's post read: 'Boss. Thank you for everything you have done for me and our country! You have been one of England’s greatest ever managers and it has been a pleasure to have served as your captain throughout.

'You helped our nation connect and believe in our team again. There have been so many highlights and we’ve made memories together that will last forever!

Southgate stepped down as the Three Lions coach following a 2-1 defeat to Spain

'Good luck with your next chapter and I’m sure we’ll see each other around. Thanks Boss!'

It comes after it was revealed that England's Under 21s head coach Lee Carsley is reportedly in pole position to succeed Southgate as interim manager.

The former Everton player is highly likely to lead the Three Lions in their next international match against the Republic of Ireland in less than eight weeks' time, according to The Sun.

The FA are expected to mirror the appointment of Southgate in 2016, who was promoted from Under 21s boss to England manager - also on an interim basis initially.

FA bosses have confirmed that they are looking at appointing a new manager, but they feel Carsley, 50, is best placed to take over for England's next match.

It is also said to be 'highly unlikely' for Man United to swoop for Southgate – even if the club were to endure a disastrous start to the season and part ways with Erik ten Hag.
