Harry Maguire explains his reaction after nervy FA Cup win over Coventry, amid Antony ear-cupping celebration... as he insists the Red Devils stars 'let themselves down' with late collapse

Harry Maguire has reflected on Man United's celebrations after their FA Cup semi-final victory over Coventry City.

United edged past their Championship opponents at Wembley on Sunday, but their victory wasn't without drama after they squandered a three-goal lead before triumphing 4-2 on penalties.

Coventry also had a goal chalked off in extra time by VAR when USA striker Haji Wright was marginally offside before he squared to Victor Torp to tuck home.

The chaotic clash capped the latest underwhelming performance and dismal collapse by the Red Devils in a season that has been marred by problems both on and off the field.

After Rasmus Hojlund tucked home the winning penalty, most of United's players refused to celebrate too much, with the likes of Maguire going over to console, shake hands with, and praise Coventry's players.

I think you can tell a lot about the type of people Maguire & Antony are by how differently they react to knocking Coventry out of the FA Cup… pic.twitter.com/pYZ5qJcY7A

Harry Maguire has reflected on Man United's celebrations after their victory over Coventry

Antony caused controversy by cupping his ear to Coventry's players after United triumphed

Most of United's stars refused to celebrate and Maguire insisted that was the right thing to do

However, his team-mate Antony was criticised for cupping his ear in celebration towards Coventry's players and fans.

And, speaking on the nervy victory and those scenes at the end of the game, Maguire reflected on the feeling of relief.

'The way that the game went, it was just crazy to be involved in,' he told Sky Sports.  'I think in the couple of hours from the start of the game to the end of the game, the amount of emotion you went through, you're just feeling probably a little bit of relief.

'I don't think we needed to celebrate too hard. We let ourselves down in the last 20 minutes of normal time and to play for this club, it involves huge responsibility, and we didn't take responsibility in that last 20 minutes of the game.

'But like I said, the way that the game ended, we were disappointed with the way we acted.'

Many were hugely critical of United and Ten Hag despite the victory, which led to the Dutchman branding the media as 'embarrassing' .

But, in truth it has been a torrid season for the Red Devils, with the club failing to build on their achievements of winning the Carabao Cup and finishing third in Ten Hag's first year at the club.

After crashing out of the Champions League in the group stage, they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, they are almost certain to miss out on the top four, with Ten Hag's men 16 points adrift of the Champions League spots, while they have won 15 and lost 12 league games this season, evidencing their struggles and inconsistency.

Their goal difference of minus one only adds to to the storyline of a difficult campaign and United are in a battle to even qualify for the Europa Conference League.

This has led to Ten Hag coming under significant pressure, with speculation that new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe - who was watching on at Wembley alongside Avram Glazer - may look to replace him this summer.

Maguire also insisted that United let themselves down during their late collapse at Wembley

The defender claimed the players aren't impacted by the speculation surrounding Erik ten Hag

However, Maguire insisted that despite all the speculation surrounding the Dutchman, it doesn't impact the players.

'I've been at this club a long enough time to know that the noise around the place is always here, whether it's with the manager or the players,' the defender added.

'There are players under huge amounts of pressure and when you lose football matches or go on bad runs, the manager becomes under pressure as well.

'We all know that it's about maintaining our focus and aims for the season and sticking together. We believe that we can still achieve things this season.'
