Social media users have today poked fun at Rishi Sunak after the Prime Minister was drenched in the rain while announcing a summer general election. 

The premier was drowned out by protesters blasting New Labour's anthem 'Things Can Only Get Better' as he stood behind the lectern outside 10 Downing Street.

As his suit became drenched, Mr Sunak pointed to inflation being 'back to normal' and he was 'stopping the boats' as confirmed the nation would head to the polls on July 4.

'The question now is how and who do you trust to turn that foundation into a secure future... now is the moment for Britain to decide its future,' he said.

'On July 5, either Sir Keir Starmer or I will be prime minister. He has shown time and time again that he will take the easy way out and do anything to get power.

'If he was happy to abandon all the promises he made to become Labour leader once he got the job, how can you know that he won't do exactly the same thing if he were to become prime minister?'

People could not help themselves but head to X, formerly Twitter, today to post hilarious memes mocking the sodden looking Mr Sunak during the 5pm announcement.

Some X users compared Mr Sunak to looking like Roddy in 2006 animated film Flushed Away which tells the story of the uptown rat getting flushed down the toilet from his penthouse apartment and ending up in the sewers.
