Young GWS star Leek Aleer gave Giants fans a thrill on Saturday with his match-saving mark against Geelong - but left his teammates in the lurch in hilarious scenes as they were forced to wait while he took selfies with supporters after full time.

The Giants snapped a three-game losing steak and crashed Cats veteran Tom Hawkins' milestone match as most-capped Geelong player in a seesawing 11.12 (78) to 11.8 (74) victory.

The Cats wanted to celebrate Tom Hawkins' record 356th game and seemed to start the party by scoring six goals in a row to take the lead late in the game.

However, Giants captain Toby Greene kicked an amazing goal to put his team back in the lead. Greene then watched as Aleer, playing only his seventh game, stopped Geelong's final attack with an incredible mark in a huge pack just 25 metres from the goal.

The Giants star then took so long celebrating with Giants fans that he almost missed out on the team victory song

Then, in incredible scenes, the young star decided to celebrate the victory with fans in the stands instead of going to sing the team song with his waiting teammates.

The beaming defender took selfies and enjoyed the moment with young supporters for a bit too long.

'I'm ecstatic. It's surreal,' Aleer said post-game to Fox Footy.

'Obviously it's going to be one of those moments that I'll remember forever.

'I was pretty filthy with the one I dropped (earlier in the quarter). We're not a big fan of soft drops in our backline, so I was pretty filthy with myself.

'So when I saw that ball, I was like this is an opportunity for me to do something big and help the team. I saw it and just went at it and I'm just glad I took it.

'Big moments, I'm very glad to be a part of that.'

Meanwhile, his teammates stood arm-in-arm to sing the victory song but quickly noticed the match-winner was missing.

'If he keeps doing this he'll miss the song … They're about to start!' Hawks legend Jason Dunstall laughed on the TV coverage.

'He's out doing 100 selfies! Someone's going to have to run and grab him.

'They're going to grab him: "Hey mate, we've got a song to sing!" That's brilliant.'

Triple premiership Lion Alastair Lynch added: 'How good is this, totally oblivious to it – that's great! So you should.'

When Leek Aleer was five years old he fled from war-torn South Sudan alongside his mother Tabitha and younger sister Agot.

A Giants official eventually tapped Aleer on the shoulder and got him to sprint into the Giants' rooms, where he was greeted with loud cheers.

'It's been a big month for us coming off a lot of travel. So for us to get this win is big, so I'm just ecstatic,' Aleer said.

'We haven't been in form for the past three or four weeks, so for us to come out here and get this win is amazing.

'I think it'll be really good for the boys. The energy levels will be up for sure … I can't wait to celebrate with the boys.'

The result sent GWS (7-4) back into the top four above their opponents, and condemned fifth-placed Geelong (7-4) to a fourth straight defeat for the first time under dual premiership coach Chris Scott.

But it came at a cost, with experienced midfielder Stephen Coniglio substituted out with a shoulder injury.

'It was a gutsy win from our guys. I thought we showed great character,' Kingsley said.

'We were under the pump in that last quarter ... and we just held up.

'It was a really pleasing win that gives us a little bit of a boost going into the bye, and hopefully we learn some lessons and come out the other side a better team.'
