Manchester United will seek to strengthen their slim hopes of securing Champions League football next season when they take on fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag's men suffered a crushing blow at Chelsea on Thursday, conceding two goals deep into injury-time in a 4-3 defeat.

To make matters worse, three United players were forced off to add to the club's excruciating injury problems this season.

The busy Premier League schedule continues this Sunday when league leaders Liverpool visit Old Trafford.

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at how United could line up for the highly-anticipated showdown.

GOALKEEPER

Andre Onana's place in the team is guaranteed and that will come as no surprise.

The Cameroonian had an opportunity to be a hero against Chelsea, but was sent the wrong way by Cole Palmer for both penalties - including one deep into added time.

DEFENCE

Injuries mean Ten Hag is down to the bare bones in defence. Centre-backs Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans were both forced off against Chelsea after suffering injury.

It came just days after Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof were ruled out for a month with calf and hamstring injuries respectively, joining Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia on the sidelines.

Willy Kambwala is likely to start after injuries to Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans

It will pave way for 19-year-old Willy Kambwala to slot into the team for his second start of the season. It's a problem Erik ten Hag will not have wanted given Liverpool deadliness in front of goal.

Kambwala will likely partner Harry Maguire, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot the full backs.

MIDFIELD

Kobe Mainoo has cemented his place in the team in recent months and he again impressed in the defeat at Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Casemiro was forced off with an injury and his form since getting back into the side has raised eyebrows.

'Our leaders on the pitch, Casemiro, we also have to take off, that doesn't help, they know how to deal and bring a win over the line. So I can't tell now in perspective to Sunday but we had to take them both off,' Ten hag said about the Brazilian's injury.

Scott McTominay, who is the club's second highest scorer this season alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes with nine goals, will likely be given a start alongside the latter.

ATTACK

Antony produced on of his best performances in United colours against Chelsea. The Brazilian gave Marc Cucurella a horrid time and got a superb assist for Garnacho's goal. However, it's difficult to see Ten Hag giving him two starts within a week.

Marcus Rashford holds a poor record against Liverpool having scored against them just twice in 13 Premier League appearances but is likely to replace Antony in the team.

But against a force like Liverpool, Ten Hag is likely to play it more safe and pick his best players regardless of form.

Rasmus Hojlund will spearhead the attack as he seeks to add to his seven-goal league tally this term.
