Inside Australian NBA star Josh Giddey's tight-knit family as they are blindsided by disturbing allegations against him amid claims he's been 'royally stitched up' in underage scandal

Family and friends of NBA rising star Josh Giddey have been left blindsided by the disturbing allegations that have threatened his career.

Sources close to the star's family say they believe he has been 'stitched up' after claims the 21-year old had an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl first surfaced on social media.

Giddey is the son of Australian basketball royalty, with both of his parents playing professionally in their younger days.

On Tuesday, Warrick and Kim Giddey and their young daughters remained inside their home in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Yarraville, where they have been under siege by reporters.

While the Giddey clan has refused to publicly comment on the scandal involving Josh, sources close to them have told Daily Mail Australia they are fully supporting him in his time of need.

Last week the NBA launched an investigation into the claims against Giddey, who has become one of the Oklahoma City Thunder's key players since he was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Giddey has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor after photos of him with a girl recently surfaced on social media.

'This kind of situation would be very trying for a family that is pretty normal other than having a 21-year old multi-millionaire son playing in the NBA,' a source said.

'They are the most down-to-earth people you could meet. They're very humble. Josh is a good kid and knowing the family, I thought there's something more to this because he's not like that. The consensus is he's been royally stitched up.'

The source said no-one who knows Giddey believed he would ever knowingly engage in an inappropriate relationship.

'Josh grew up with a family that didn't always tell him he was a superstar. Very talented but never thought he was better than everyone. Straight to the NBL for one season before being drafted,' the source said.

Josh's father, Warrick, played in the NBL from 1987 to 2002, winning two championships  with the Melbourne Tigers.

Unlike his famous son, Warrick never fulfilled his dream to play in the NBA.

'The old man's career was that of a blue-collar worker who had to work just to make it,' the source said.

'He wasn't naturally gifted or talented so always had to put in extra. Prior to Josh being drafted the family would not have been used to the attention as Warrick was never a superstar.

'Even after Warrick finished playing and went into coaching, he never was a superstar or outstanding enough to garner the attention.'

Giddey's appearance in this photo quickly went viral on social media

During an interview before the scandal broke, Warrick spoke fondly of his son's character.

'I think the biggest thing for Josh was just to learn to be a team player. To be unselfish. To really make the people around him better and include his teammates and with all my kids... it's not about you, it's about the team,' he said.

According to TMZ Sports, California's Newport Beach Police Department is said to be investigating the claims against Giddey to find out whether there is any validity to them.

The age of consent in California is 18.

News of the investigation came after new video surfaced that allegedly shows Giddey and the young woman dancing together in a nightclub.

Fans claim the video exonerates the Australian Boomers point guard because minors cannot legally enter a nightclub in the United States.

In the US, any Type I establishment like a nightclub requires all patrons to be 21 years old.

However, most major cities have 18+ nightclubs where people aged 18-21 can attend, but cannot consume alcohol on the premises.

'Am I witnessing the saving of Josh Giddey rn?' one fan asked.

'Did bro just save josh Giddey career?' posted another.

'Bro might not play for the thunder but he just gave the assist of the century to Josh Giddey.' added another.

The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, but there are exceptions.

Minors aged 14 can have consensual sex with other minors younger than 18 years under what is called the Romeo and Juliet law.

Oklahoma also allows for consensual sex between a minor and an adult when they are married.

Giddey received a loud roar of support from Oklahoma supporters when he took to the court to play Philadelphia last weekend.

But the Aussie star remained tight-lipped when interviewed before the tip-off.

'I get the question guys, I completely understand you guys want to know about it but just right now I don't have anything to say,' Giddey said.

Thunder coach Mark Diagneault said the star guard would continue to play until a directive came to rule him out.

'It's obviously a league matter at this point, so the ball's in their court on that,' Diagneault said.

Giddey has also received support from his Australian Boomers coach Brian Goorjian, who will travel to the United States to visit him and other Aussie players next month.

Addressing the scandal on Wednesday, former Aussie NBA star Andrew Bogut urged Giddey to 'tighten his circle' once the dust settled.

'He's got so much to lose. Regardless of what comes out in the next week or two ... all the memes and all this s*** now, that's going to be there forever. It's hard to take it back on social media.

'It's just a s****y situation for everyone involved.

'It's a valuable lesson for Josh. He's got to tighten his circle and focus on that because he's only in this thing for 10 or 15 years.

'From what I understand and knew, he's never been a guy that's gotten in trouble or knowingly wanted to go out and be silly.'
