Sam Kerr's withdrawal from the Olympics has had a silver lining for the Matildas star as it left her able to enjoy a luxury holiday in Mexico with her fiancee and fellow footballer Kristie Mewis.

While her Aussie teammates were being put through their paces in Adelaide ahead of Friday night's friendly against China, the couple were enjoying the sun, sea and sumptuous surrounds at a top resort in Los Cabos.

With rooms going for as much as $6,800 a night, the Viceroy hotel boasts incredible views of the Sea of Cortez, five picturesque swimming pools, state-of-the art rooms overlooking the water, a rooftop bar and several gourmet dining options.

Over the past few days, Kerr and Mewis have treated their social media followers to glimpses of their stylish vacation, showing them getting dressed to the nines for a meal, lounging about in their room, riding ponies and even watching a performance by a performer who dances with fire while being twirled around by her hair.

One clip from Mewis's TikTok shows her dancing as she puts on make-up before going out, with Kerr entering the room and flashes the engagement ring she publicly debuted back in April.

Kerr repeatedly captioned photos of the hotel with the words 'in paradise' as she posted shots of her fiancee taking in the surrounds.

The Matildas skipper has been sidelined since picking up a serious knee injury in January, robbing her of the chance to play as Chelsea won the Women's Super League title for a fifth straight year.

Her ruptured anterior cruciate ligament crushed her dream of representing Australia at the Paris Olympics in July, with her omission from the team officially revealed earlier this month

That capped off a shocking start to 2024 for the 30-year-old, who was charged with racially harassing a police officer in a bombshell announcement back in March.

She pleaded not guilty but was hit with another setback when her defence team's efforts to have the charge thrown out failed, leaving her to face a four-day trial in February next year

Mewis had been sidelined by injury she picked up in February while playing for West Ham and was unsure of her availability to play for the USA at the Olympics when she was interviewed in March.

Meanwhile, Kerr's Matildas teammates have been training hard ahead of their matches against China on Friday in Adelaide and Monday in Sydney.

Mary Fowler is certain to feature in Paris unless she's injured, but several other members of the squad are chasing the three Olympics spots coach Tony Gustavsson has revealed are still up for grabs.

The Swede has chosen 15 of the 18 players he can take to France, with one spot reserved for Katrina Gorry if she can overcome her injured ankle, which required surgery.

That means the remaining spots are being chased by the likes of Courtney Nevin, Cortnee Vine and Charli Grant.

'The worst part of being a head coach is I have to tell someone at the end of this week that you're not going to the Olympics,' Gustavsson said.

'It's a lot of evaluation of trainings, look at players, meetings with the tech staff, and preparation is not just about the game, it's about the Olympics.

'The game is a massive step in the preparation for the Olympics ... we don't have that many games left to prepare, so it's a very, very important game.'
