Is Biden fit to serve? Democrats who want him off the 2024 ticket reveal if they think he has the stamina to finish his term

4 months ago 33

The pressure from Democrats is not letting up for Joe Biden to step aside from the top of the ticket in November, but so far few have voiced that the president should vacate the White House right now.

DailyMail.com contacted every single congressional Democrat who has called for Biden to take his name out of the running for the 2024 race. A small handful declined to comment, most were silent about the prospect.

So far 35 congressional Democrats have called on Biden to cease his campaign for president, 13 of them doing so on Friday.

Four House Democrats on Friday wrote a letter asking Biden to 'pass the torch' in November - Reps. Chuy Garcia, Mark Pocan Jared Huffman and Mark Veasey.

But, 'the congressmen who signed this letter have no doubt President Biden can finish his term,' a senior House Democratic aide familiar with the letter told DailyMail.com.

'The question is whether or not they think he could beat Trump in November, and that’s why they wrote the letter. All have serious concerns about that, as do their constituents. President Biden has been one of the most effective presidents in modern history, but it is time to pass the torch to preserve his legacy.'

Another aide to a Democrat who's called on the president to resign told DailyMail.com when asked about Biden's president fitness for the office: 'The American people voted for President Biden to serve through the end of this term.'

It came after a week of leaks about Biden's closest allies and friends - Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer - all having conversations with him in which they told him he needs to rethink his viability as a candidate.

A startling new NBC report on Friday said the Biden family has started exploring what an exit path from the race would look like.

The president is currently isolating with a Covid-19 diagnosis at his Rehoboth beach house.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., on Friday revealed that at a recent event Biden could not recall who he was, despite the fact he sees Biden as a 'mentor' and 'friend.'

'I saw him in a small group at Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day,' he wrote in a Boston Globe op-ed. 'For the first time, he didn’t seem to recognize me. Of course, that can happen as anyone ages, but as I watched the disastrous debate a few weeks ago, I have to admit that what I saw in Normandy was part of a deeper problem.'

'The harsh reality is that all the characteristics that have made Biden an irrepressible force — the energy, the vitality, the sharp, scrappy wit — are flickering.'

On Friday Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a top ally of Biden and a campaign co-chair, told the Washington Post the president is 'weighing what he should weigh, which is who is the best candidate to win in November.'

Only one House Democrat - Rep. Marie Gleusenkamp Perez, Wash., has hinted that Biden should resign.

Last Friday she said she has 'doubt' about his 'health and fitness to do the job' following his disastrous debate weeks ago.

Perez also said she has concerns about whether he is actually the 'one making important decisions about our country, rather than unelected advisors.'

'Americans deserve to feel their president is fit enough to do the job,' she continued in a statement to local channel KGW8.

'The crisis of confidence in the President’s leadership needs to come to an end. The President should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first.'
