Aussie Olympic surfer Jack Robinson has been taken away by an ambulance after injuring himself just days out from his event.

Robinson, who is considered one of Australia's best gold medal chances, was left bleeding after suffering a foot injury after falling off a wave at Teahupo'o in Tahiti and cutting himself on the reef.

The 26-year-old received medical attention while in the water before being removed from the surf.

Robinson was then helped up the beach and taken by ambulance to a medical facility.

The West Aussie is regarded as one of the best barrel riders on the planet and many have predicted that he will win Olympic gold.

The opening rounds are due to begin on Sunday July 28 (AEST), meaning Robinson does not have much time to recover before his opening heats.

The surf team from Australia has both Ryan Callinan and Sally Fitzgibbons ready on standby as replacements if surfers become unavailable.

Meanwhile, Robinson's mum told press earlier this week that she would be flying to Tahiti to watch him compete in person.

'He got comfortable surfing big waves quite early on,' she told the South West Times.

'It's a pinnacle for him, but you'd hope his career will have a long time to run.

'The Olympics, in his lifetime, he may only be able to compete once or twice. It's huge.'
