Jesse Lingard shot a defiant response to his FC Seoul boss after Kim Gi-dong claimed the ex-Manchester United man 'isn't a football player'.

The 31-year-old completed a surprise move to the South Korean club in February after being released from his Nottingham Forest contract at the end of last season.

But he has made just three appearances so far, and has been yet to start for his new club, with the manager slammed Lingard for a lack of effort, claiming that the forward 'doesn't fight and doesn't run'

In an Instagram post, Lingard appeared to take the high road, sharing a quote that read: 'I can't lie, this s*** gets overwhelming but I just keep pushing.'

In his own words in the caption, he added: 'Accept what it is, let go of what it was and have faith in what it will be. P.S. we back on the grass.'

There were also clips on his Instagram stories showing Lingard training in the gym, as he works on his fitness following several months out of the game.

It followed the public criticism from his manager, and the potential that he will be dropped from the team for future matches.

'I've been thinking a lot about removing Jesse (Lingard). I don't think a player who doesn't run for a few minutes is a football player,' Ki-dong said.

'If he doesn't fight, and doesn't run better than the player who runs for 90 minutes? If you're going to play soccer in the name, shouldn't you just take the retired players?'

Lingard continues to build up his fitness having not played competitively for over six months prior to the move  to South Korea.

Mail Sport previously reported the former England international had sustained a meniscus issue, although the niggle was said to be a minor setback, not a serious problem.

FC Seoul, who sit fourth in the K League 1 after five games, take on Daegu on Sunday.
