Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is close to committing his future to the club by  agreeing a new contract.

The Magpies have held a succession of positive meetings with the Brazil international and his representatives and are confident of tying up a new four-year deal, according to talkSPORT.

And the Brazilian is set to become one of the club’s top earners alongside compatriot Bruno Guimaraes.

The move would be a huge boost for Eddie Howe.

Joelinton has just 15 months remaining on his existing deal, and the club were ready to listen to offers if they could not agree a new deal.

The Brazilian is currently recovering from thigh surgery after being injured in January

Joelinton is currently recovering from thigh surgery.

The Brazilian was forced off during the Magpies' FA Cup victory over rivals Sunderland on January 6.

Howe had previously suggested the 27-year-old could be out for around six weeks but the decision to operate now means the player will be sidelined until at least May.

A statement from the club read: 'Newcastle United can confirm that Joelinton has successfully undergone surgery on a thigh injury sustained earlier this month.

'The midfielder will now commence a period of rehabilitation overseen by the club's medical team and is expected to return to action in May 2024.'
