Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a sensational return to Borussia Dortmund in 2025.

The German boss is nearing the end of a near nine-year spell at Liverpool after revealing he was 'running out of energy' in an emotional message to supporters announcing his departure.

In his bombshell January statement, Klopp even shared the possibility he could retire from football management altogether - but said he needed more time before making a final decision.

According to The Independent, the possibility of the 56-year-old returning to the Westfalenstadion has become the source of many discussions.

Current boss Edin Terzic has come under increasing pressure this season after his side followed up their comical failure to win the Bundesliga last term with a poor league campaign that sees them outside of the Champions League places.

Current manager Edin Terzic has come under pressure this term after a disappointing league campaign, though, Dortmund have reached the Champions League semi-final

He has a deal that runs until 2025, though the report claims the chatter around Klopp surrounds bringing him back as head of football rather than head coach.

The club have been desperate to emulate the success achieved under the German manager during his seven-year spell.

Klopp led the side to a German Cup, back-to-back Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League final, which they lost to rivals Bayern Munich.

Dortmund have the chance to advance to this year's final and dispel their Wembley demons when they take on PSG in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

Klopp's final season with the outfit ended with a disappointing seventh-place finish ahead of a sabbatical that was cut short by his appointment at Anfield. Nine years on, Klopp has only three games left in charge of the Reds.

When his announcement was made the Reds dreamt of a quadruple to give the manager that delivered the long-awaited Premier League crown a fairytale send-off. Liverpool were able to clinch the Carabao Cup.

However, defeats to Manchester United and Atalanta in the FA Cup and Europa League, combined with a succession of woeful results in the league, have scuppered those designs.

The Reds are believed to have shelved plans for an open-top bus parade at the end of the season - unless the club secure an unlikely second Premier League title.

The idea of an end of season celebration in honour of Klopp's time at the club was rejected out of hand by the man himself earlier this year.

'That's the one part (of the parade) that is not so cool, that it could be seen as a farewell,' Klopp said.

'I don't think that makes sense.'
