Jurgen Klopp has named the 'dumbest thing' Liverpool can do after surrendering their advantage in the title race following their 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

The Reds appeared to be in cruise control after taking the lead at Old Trafford, only for Jarrel Quansah to present Bruno Fernandes a goal, before Kobbie Mainoo gave the hosts the lead.

Mohamed Salah's late penalty earned Liverpool a point, but the title fate is no longer in their hands.

Klopp's side are now behind Arsenal on goal difference, with the Gunners having a nine-goal advantage over the Reds.

The German though believes it would be wrong to set their focus on chasing Arsenal's superior goal difference in the remaining seven games of the season.

Jurgen Klopp believes chasing Arsenal's superior goal difference advantage would be the 'dumbest thing' Liverpool can do after losing their spot at the head of the Premier League table

Liverpool failed to make their chances pay and were punished by Manchester United

Arsenal are ahead on goal difference with a nine goal separating them and Liverpool

He told a reporter in his post-match press conference: 'You will, and other people will tell us 'they have a better goal difference, we have to go for that'.

'That will be the dumbest thing we can do. It doesn't happen on purpose, you don't win a game and want to score eight goals and it happens.

'We are who we are are, we are how we are, and that is why we are in the race and I am absolutely fine with that. Until yesterday, we were top of the table and now it is Arsenal.'

He went on to add: 'We want to be there after 38 (games), after the last matchday. It's always better to be there the whole time and get some distance between you (and the other teams).

'We are fine with our situation. I wish we would have more points but I am absolutely fine - and I am actually over the moon these boys brought us into that situation.

'The same boys that missed a few chances are the boys who brought us 71 points.'

Liverpool famously were left needing to chase Manchester City's superior goal advantage in the 2013-14 title fight, following their 2-0 loss to Chelsea.

Liverpool are now relying on Arsenal to drop points against other teams, or to somehow overturn the large goal difference advantage that the Gunners currently possess

Luis Suarez was left in tears after Liverpool drew 3-3 with Crystal Palace in a game where the Reds were chasing Manchester City's superior goal advantage in the 2013-14 title race

The Reds took a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace, but kept pressing for goals which allowed the Eagles to mount a famous comeback to snatch a draw.

Klopp's side would either need a large swing in goal difference to overcome Arsenal, or hope the Gunners drop points by the end of the season.

Manchester City are also lurking in the title fight just one point behind the pair, with arguably the easiest run-in of the trio.
