Kamala Harris bizarrely claims that women's college basketball 'wasn't allowed' a March Madness bracket until 2022 - despite first female NCAA tournament taking place in 1982

Kamala Harris may have been among the few to predict Oakland's stunning upset of Kentucky in the ongoing men's NCAA Tournament, but the country's first female Vice President is apparently less familiar with the women's tourney.

Speaking to an interviewer in Spectrum News footage, Harris attempted to offer a 'bit of a history lesson' on the women's tournament by falsely stating that 'women's teams were not allowed to have brackets until 2022.'

'Think about that,' she told the nodding interview. 'Talk about progress, better late than never. Because what that has done, how we love March Madness, and even just now allowing the women to have brackets and what that does to encourage people to talk about the women's teams, to watch them, and now they're being covered.'

'This is the reality, people used to say ''women's sports, this isn't interesting,'' well if you can't see it, you won't be. But when you see it, you realize ''oh.'''

Harris is right about the popularity of women's hoops, which recent enjoyed its highest rated game ever – Monday's Iowa-LSU Elite 8 clash. However, her bizarre statement about there not being any brackets until 2022 appears to be a woeful conflation of several facts.

For starters, the women's tournament was launched in 1982 – 40 years prior than Harris' claim.

More to the point, Harris appears to be thinking of the 'March Madness' trademark, which was only applied to the women's tournament after being exclusively used by he men until 2022.

Adding to the outlandishness of her statement is the fact that both she and her husband filled out women's tournament brackets in 2021 – both of which were published online.

' So you went with #1 seeds,' Harris wrote on Twitter in response to her husband Douglas Emhoff's picks. 'I thought you were a fan of #2s!'

Despite the awkward phrasing of her post, Emhoff responded with a smiling emoji, thereby bringing the social media interaction between spouses to a merciful end.

Social media users were naturally appalled at Harris' misinformation, and promptly began poking fun at the Veep.

'When pressed on foreign policy, she proudly shared that she had Israel beating Hamas in the Sweet Sixteen,' one critic responded on X.

Another added: 'Did you know that it wasn't until this year when they finally cut the bottom out of the peach basket for the women.'

The 42end edition of the women's Final Four will be played Friday night in Cleveland, where undefeated South Carolina will face NC State in the early game before Caitlin Clark's Iowa tangles with Paige Bueckers' Connecticut in the late matchup.
