Kieran Tripper has revealed that an England team-mate 'burst out laughing' during his first speech as Three Lions captain.

Trippier is an established member of the England squad, playing 48 times for his country, and he is expected to start Euro 2024 at left back for his side as Luke Shaw continues to nurse his injury.

Since making his debut in 2017, the Newcastle man has earned his way up the leadership pecking order and has on a number of occasions captained his country.

The first time was back in October 2021, when he was named skipper for a World Cup qualifier against Andorra, and gave his first pre-match captain's speech, but it didn't all go to plan.

Speaking on England's 'The Lions Den', the full back opened up on how it went downhill when one particular England team-mate failed to hold back their laughter when he was trying to deliver his speech.

The incident happened before a World Cup qualifier against Andorra in 2021, which was when Trippier first wore the armband

'One time, we played Andorra and I was captain,' he said. 'Nobody even knows this so we may as well get it out.

So I'm the captain and you have to do a speech before in the huddle, normally it's H [Harry Kane]. Obviously, me and Picks [Jordan Pickford] are really close. I was nervous as it was and as I was speaking I clocked eyes with him. And he started bursting out laughing.'

With Pickford sat next to him, he continued: 'You know when you're speaking, doing a speech, lost where I was going, everyone just started laughing their heads off. That was it.

'And then I was captain again but the thing is, every five minutes, him [Pickford], Kyle Walker and everyone were going, 'Oh I can't wait to hear your speech', and I'm thinking, 'I don't need this right now'. I've done it many times at Newcastle but with these boys it's different.

'The second time it went better but I've never told anyone about it before.'

England and manager Gareth Southgate have often received plaudits for the comradery they have built in the squad, with players closer than they have been before and many of them regarded as friends.

Southgate has insitilled a comfortable environment for the players, where they are able to be themselves but also remain professional.

Trippier captained England again in their penultimate friendly before Euro 2021 at his home stadium of St James' Park, where they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0.

Kane will return to skipper duties for the start of the tournament, however, with England's first game on Sunday against Serbia.

He has captained his side a number of times since, including against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Shaw has trained with the first team as he looks to win the race to play a part in the group stages, but Sunday's match is set to come too early.

He trained on Tuesday but wore a green bib, the only player to do so, with reports suggesting it was to mark him out as a player for others to not make contact with due to his rehabilitation work.

John Stones, meanwhile, is a doubt for the Serbia clash after he missed training on Wednesday and was confined to his room due to illness
