King's Cross St Pancras station is evacuated 'after flare is set off in the Underground'

King's Cross St Pancras station was evacuated today 'after a flare is set off in the underground'.

Fire engines were spotted outside of the station as well as 'a strong smell of gas and smoke' by witnesses, the Sun reported. 

The station closed as fire crew arrived to investigate the incident.

Video footage shows passengers running through the station and covering their nose and mouth.

A TFL spokesperson said: 'King's Cross St. Pancras station is closed while we respond to a fire alert.'

A police officer at the station told the Sun: 'Someone has set off a flare in the underground and we’ve had to shut down the area.'

One witness said on social media how fumes in the station made him feel 'extremely dizzy'.

A video has been posted on X of passengers being evacuated from the underground.

The station later reopened and was announced in an update on X

It was captioned with: 'Evacuation from King's Cross, could smell smoke through the walkways coming up from the Victoria line. #tfl #kingscross.' 

A speaker blaring in the background can be heard saying, 'Your attention please. Due to a reported emergency will all passengers leave the station immediately'.

The station later reopened and was announced in an update on X.
