A man has been dramatically arrested and charged over a home invasion which left a convicted armed robber dead and the alleged victim with a partially severed arm.
Desmond Avery, 26, allegedly stormed a home at Kingscliff, in northern NSW, about 8pm on Tuesday, when resident Allan Kerr, 66, was allegedly struck multiple times with an axe.
Police and paramedics found Avery's alleged accomplice Trae Laurie, 29, a convicted armed robber, dying from a stab wound at the home on Oxford Street.
Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer said officers called to the Housing Commission home found Laurie laying on the verandah with a 'face covering' and a wound to the chest
Attempts to revive him failed and he died at the scene.

Mr Kerr was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious arm injuries where he underwent surgery and remains in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established at the home and detectives launched Strike Force Chams to investigate the incident.
On Wednesday evening, police swooped on an address in Kingscliff to arrest Avery and he was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
Avery was charged with special aggravated breaking and enter and committing a serious indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday.
Police will allege that the Avery forced entry to the home and assaulted the occupant before fleeing.
They will also allege that Mr Kerr grabbed a knife to defend himself but he has not been charged in relation to the incident.
