A Compton couple have been ordered to stop filling in potholes in their neighborhood or face potential penalties from the city.

Daisy De La Rosa, 29, and her husband Alex, 35, became so tired of the damage potholes in their local roads were wreaking on their car that they decided to take action.

The couple, who depend on their car for their work as contracted couriers, had endured popped tires and a broken suspension.

Finally, after one more flat tire they drove to Home Depot, bought $400 worth of asphalt and repaired five potholes on their street, the LA Times reported

Their neighbors were delighted, the couple told the publication, even requesting they fill in more holes on the dilapidated streets.

Alex De La Rosa, 35, said he became tired of the damage the potholes wreaked on his car

Daisy De La Rosa, 29, said the city 'is upset with us because we basically embarrassed them'

City officials were less than impressed and issued the De La Rosa's a cease and desist letter on March 14

However, city officials were less than impressed and issued the De La Rosa's a cease and desist letter on March 14.

'Your actions have raised serious concerns as they [pose] a threat to public safety and the integrity of our city's infrastructure,' the letter said, as reported by the Times.

'It is imperative that all maintenance and repair work on public roadways be conducted in accordance with established regulations and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors' it stated.

'[The city] is upset with us because we basically embarrassed them,' Daisy told the Times, claiming they had to fill the holes as the city had let the roads deteriorate so badly.

Now the public-spirited couple could face fines, penalties and 'potential liability for damages' according to the city's letter.

However, Daisy told the Times they have no intention of stopping and have even been given generous donations by members of the community to continue their work.

The couple have set up a GoFundMe to support the project, raising $1,300 to date.

'We've begged the city for help, but they can't keep up' Daisy wrote on the page.

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also side-stepped official channels and was seen filling potholes in Brentwood last year

However, one of the holes he filled turned out to be a service trench for gas line repairs

'Many of us are hardworking and cannot afford these costly repairs.'

Adding: 'My husband and I have taken matters into our own hands and are filling the holes ourselves.'

Local businesses have also thrown their weight behind the couple's efforts.

Road Soup and American Road Patch have donated supplies and visited the neighborhood to see the couple's work.

'While we budget for street repairs annually, our Public Works Department is currently critically understaffed' the city said in a statement.

Adding: 'Addressing infrastructure issues remains a top priority for the City of Compton. We stress the importance of safety and urge residents to continue reporting road concerns.'

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also side-stepped official channels and was seen filling potholes in Brentwood last year.

'Today, after the whole neighborhood has been upset about this giant pothole that's been screwing up cars and bicycles for weeks, I went out with my team and fixed it,' Schwarzenegger said in a tweet at the time.

'I always say, let's not complain, let's do something about it,' he added.
