Former United States striker Landon Donovan has explained a bizarre new hairstylr that caused an uproar on social media.
Throughout his playing career, the 42-year-old always had a crew cut or an even buzz cut.
Several years after his retirement, the disjointed hair style, leaving patches of his scalp exposed confused fans when he was on punditry duty for Fox Sports' coverage of Austria against France in Euro 2024.
Donovan, during a hilarious text exchange with former LA Galaxy team-mate Mike Magee, provided an explanation to his new cut.
Magee wrote: 'LD check your Twitter asap and prob fire your barber', with a 'grimacing' emoji.

Donovan replied by saying: 'Where were you 7 hours ago??? Had a hair transplant procedure two weeks ago and and was told it wouldn't show up on camera'.
Donovan last played in Major League Soccer in 2016, then continued with short stints with Leon and the San Diego Sockers indoor team.
Donovan was seen as the most accomplished male soccer player in American history before Christian Pulisic came onto the scene.
The former Los Angeles Galaxy captain played for the United States in three World Cups, with his 2014 exile being a defining moment at the end of his career.
Donovan is part of the Fox Sports punditry team for the entire Euro 2024 tournament, with him taking on an analyst and colour commentator role.
In his first game since debuting his new haircut, France defeated Austria 1-0.
Donovan will surely call another game during the tournament soon, giving his new haircut a more time in the spotlight.
