Nine people on board a US Navy P-8A plane swam to safety on Monday afternoon after their plane overshot the runway on landing in Hawaii, and crashed into the sea.

Honolulu first responders rushed to the scene, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Gunnery Sgt. Orlando Perez said the plane was a Poseidon, a reconnaissance plane used in intelligence gathering.

It was pictured floating in in Kaneohe Bay, off Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Its fuselage appeared intact, suggesting a low-speed crash into the sea.

The plane crash was reported at around 2pm local time, off the coast of O'ahu

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) sent out the initial alert just after 2 pm for a 'probable aircraft fire incident,' according to KITV.

The P-8A is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial jet.

The base is home to over 25,000 Marines, sailors, family members and civilian employees.
