Follow Mail Sport's live blog for all the latest updates from second practice at the Las Vegas Grand Prix as practice is delayed due to loose manhole cover after Carlos Sainz stopped after going over the drain.

PENALTY: Carlos Sainz

Well, when it rains it pours for Ferrari.

Stewards have issued a penalty to the Spaniard for having replaced multiple components on his car (despite the damage coming from an issue with the track that wasn't his fault!)

Fan areas are now CLOSED

In a further sign of the chaos engulfing this race weekend, fan areas have now been closed due to 'logistical considerations'...

UPDATE: FP2 DELAYED until 10.15am

No surprise that some fans in Vegas have headed back to their hotels and called it a night... but F1 are determined to get cars back on track.

15 minute delay.

Are we definitely getting some track action?

Right, that's a fair question.

The answer is yes. It's now 1.45am local time but broadcasters have fired coverage back up and we are now closing in on what looks set to be a 90-minute second practice.

The troublesome drain covers have been taken off and the holes have been filled with asphalt.

It is understood that that should ensure no further problems on that front but this will be the latest session in F1 history (by some distance!)

Some weary drivers...

Couple of energy drinks are required with 'drained' drivers waiting around for second practice.

If all goes to plan it will be 2am when the drivers take to the Vegas circuit again...

Sainz is 'F**KED' after drain cover fiasco

Unsurprisingly Ferrari are absolutely raging.

Team boss Fred Vasseur let rip at how the track was allowed to have a loose manhole cover for Sainz to run over at near 200mph.

It was an embarrassing moment for the organisers amid the glitz and glamour of the entire weekend in Nevada.

FULL STORY HERE.

What happened overnight?

In short: CHAOS.

Just eight minutes after first practice started a red flag was waved by the race director and fans, many who had paid thousands to be in Sin City for F1's return, were left to boo.

The red flag arrived afetr Esteban Ocon's Alpine and then Carlos Sainz's Ferrari suffered significant damage having run over the damaged part of the track.
