Leny Yoro's temperament and talent impress, Casemiro still has something to offer and the kids are alright for Erik ten Hag: FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED from Man United's 2-0 win over Rangers

2 months ago 22

Manchester United bounced back from an opening pre-season defeat to Rosenborg in Trondheim by beating Rangers 2-0 at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The game will be remembered for Leny Yoro's debut, Jadon Sancho's first appearance for the club in 11 months and a dazzling performance from Amad Diallo.

United's starting XI won the first half 1-0 courtesy of a fine solo strike from Amad.

After Erik ten Hag had made 10 substitutions at the midway point, Joe Hugill then wrapped up the victory with a powerful finish in the 70th minute following an assist by Maxi Oyedele.

CHRIS WHEELER was in Edinburgh to watch Saturday's game and he picked out five things we learned from the match.

Unflappable Yoro makes a solid start

Leny Yoro made his debut for Manchester United just three days after completing a £59million move from Lille, and the teenage centre back provided plenty of evidence why there is so much expectation around his arrival.

Yoro comes with the reputation of a Rolls Royce defender who is mature beyond his years, and he certainly looked unruffled at Murrayfield despite the hype around his move to Old Trafford.

The 18-year-old reads the game so well and that bailed United out of trouble in the 10th minute when Cyriel Dessers threatened to race through. Yoro sensed the danger and accelerated to get to the ball first and stab it away from the Rangers striker.

He displayed a range of passing and was equally comfortable to carry the ball 50 yards over halfway in the 28th minute.

It wasn't a faultless performance, though, and he lost track of Dessers momentarily in the 32nd minute, allowing his opponent to collect a cross from Scott Wright and test Andre Onana. Five minutes later he was involved in a mix-up with Jonny Evans as Wright seized on Yoro's wayward pass to set up Dessers, but the new boy again read the danger to get back and intercept.

It was an impressive start for Yoro, as much for his temperament as his talent, and there is so much more to come.

Sancho's back in the red

It looked like we had seen the last of Jadon Sancho in a United shirt following his fall-out with Erik ten Hag, but the truce between the two men has allowed the England winger to have a second chance at Old Trafford.

Sancho started on the left at Murrayfield in the absence of Marcus Rashford, who missed this game with a slight knock, and he showed some bright moments despite missing a glaring chance before half-time. Casemiro swept a pass out to United's star man Amad Diallo who cut inside and this time fed Sancho in front of goal. The former Borussia Dortmund man took it first time on his right foot but swung a shot over the bar.

A couple of passes went astray but Sancho looked more like his old self, if still some way short of the player who helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final back on loan at his old club last season.

He hasn't always enjoyed tracking back but showed great determination in the 36th minute when Sam Murray's shot was blocked after United played a corner to the edge of the area, and Sancho raced the full length of the pitch to try and clear any danger.

Another player who will have more to offer in the pre-season games on tour in the US, but just seeing Sancho back in action for United is a boost in itself.

Amad's a man on a mission

Amad Diallo looked like a man on a mission against Rangers, where he spent six months on loan in 2022, and it was no surprise to see United's man of the match score an excellent opening goal.

The Ivorian tormented new Brazilian signing Jefte on the Rangers left in the first half, setting up a great chance for Ethan Wheatley, whose shot was only prevented from going in by Dujon Sterling's desperate block, and he then created a similar opportunity for Sancho.

In between, Amad scored United's opening goal in the 39th minute when he received the ball from Mount and cut inside Jefte, who slipped at the last moment, and Connor Barron wasn't able to prevent the United winger from lashing a left-foot shot past Jack Butland into the bottom corner.

He went off at half-time along with United's other nine outfield players and Jefte will have been delighted to see the back of him.

Casemiro still has something to offer

Casemiro's future has been shrouded in doubt since Ineos took over football operations at United, largely because of his £375,000-a-week salary and drop in form last season.

When he was omitted from the starting line-up for the FA Cup final win over Manchester City at Wembley in May and then left the after-match celebrations early to jet away on holiday with his family, you wondered if we would see him play for the club again.

But the veteran midfielder has returned for pre-season looking lean after missing out on Brazil's squad for the Copa America, and doesn't come across as a man who is resigned to seeing out his career in Saudi Arabia as United continue to explore options for a move.

Casemiro looked lively at Murrayfield and even more so because the excellent defensive work of young Toby Collyer allowed him to get further forward. With United tracking Paris Saint-Germain defender Manuel Ugarte, it will be fascinating to see how they handle the Casemiro situation with Scott McTominay also the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Fulham.

Kids are alright for Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag didn't hold back in criticising his players after United lost to a last-gasp goal from Rosenborg in Trondheim on Monday.

But the youngsters rose to the challenge at Murrayfield by not only preserving the half-time lead but increasing it after the break.

Collyer, in particular, Wheatley and Sam Murray all looked at home among the senior players in the first half before Ten Hag made wholesale changes at half-time.

The second goal arrived in the 70th minute when Maxi Oyedele slipped the ball through for Joe Hugill who smashed it home off the underside of the bar.

United's youngsters then held out against Rangers with the help of an excellent reflex save from Andre Onana late on.

Ten Hag should be very happy with the response from his kids.
