Mail Sport's Ian Herbert has questioned whether Gareth Southgate's humility is a strength or a weakness on the latest episode of It's All Kicking Off ahead of England's Euro 2024 last-16 clash with Slovakia tonight.
The Three Lions moved into the knockout stages in unconvincing fashion by drawing two of their three group games, but still managed to top Group C.
Southgate bore the brunt of fans' frustration as beer cups were hurled in his direction following England's 0-0 stalemate with Slovenia on Tuesday, and he admitted afterwards that supporters may have turned against him for good.
Southgate has maintained his dignity in recent days, but Herbert feels this may not actually work in his favour when it comes to getting England over the line in a major tournament.
Reflecting on Southgate's tenure prior to his 99th game in the England dugout, Herbert said: 'He doesn't appear to have a huge ego, and I think the egoists tend to prevail these days in football management.'
Southgate's French counterpart Didier Deschamps has also seen his team underperform in Germany, but claimed that the real tournament starts now as we enter the last-16, with Southgate and England under pressure to step up in order to book a quarter-final clash against Switzerland.
