A former Liverpool player believes his old club have chosen the perfect replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Slot's appointment was confirmed by Liverpool just 24 hours after Jurgen Klopp took charge of his last game following nine years in charge at Anfield.

The 45-year-old officially took charge on June 1, leaving Feyenoord in the Eredivisie after restoring them to Europe's elite in his three years at the helm.

And ex-Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could not speak more highly of his fellow Dutchman.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, Wijnaldum said, 'I trained at Feyenoord for a few more days at the beginning of this season and there I saw how Slot worked. That was of a very high level, I thought that was really great.

The former Feyenoord boss officially took charge of the Reds at the start of the month

'I can compare him to Klopp and Mourinho and then I say Slot is of the same level.

'Yes, he's coming into a completely different world now, that's just the case. But that doesn't mean he can't do what he did at Feyenoord there?'

Wijnaldum spent five seasons playing under Klopp at Anfield, making nearly 200 appearances.

He helped the club win four trophies during that time, the Premier League, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

The 33-year-old departed for PSG in 2021 and now plays for Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
