Over one million people have ran in the London Marathon since it began over 40 years ago in 1981.

Some 26.2 miles, the annual long-distance run loops through the city and often includes some of London's greatest landmarks.

Hundreds of thousands of keen runners apply and for the first time in history more than half a million people entered the ballot for 2024's race, according to TCS London Marathon.

More than 50,000 people, a record number, are expected to take part in this year's marathon and there will be 30 seconds of applause before Sunday's race in memory of last year's elite men's race winner Kelvin Kiptum who died in a car accident in February at the age of 24.

When is the next London Marathon?

Next year, the London Marathon will be held on April 27 and the ballot to enter is open now until April 26, 2024.

People from around the world can put their name forward and successful applicants will be drawn at random.

What are the entry fees?

You do not need to pay the fee to enter the ballot but if you do secure a place it will cost £69.99 for UK residents.

Those entering the draw from the UK can choose to pay the fee when they first apply for the ballot, regardless of the outcome, and donate it to the London Marathon Foundation charity.

Unsuccessful applicants in the first ballot who donated their entry fee will be entered in a second draw to have a another chance of securing a place.

If you do secure a spot and previously chose to donate the entry fee, the cost will be reduced from £69.99 to £49.99.

Anyone who does not manage to win a spot in both ballots will be given a 'premium winter running top' worth £60, according to the TCS London Marathon website.

Those who are successful in either ballot will have their entry already paid by the fee if they previously chose to donate it.

Applicants who did not originally donate when entering the ballot but have secured a place will be required to pay the full £69.99.

What about international applicants?

International participants will be required to pay £120 to enter, as well as £26 to offset carbon.

This is in an attempt to reduce the environmental impact the marathon has.
