Lonhro, one of Australia's most popular horses, has died aged 25.

The horse, who won 26 of his 35 starts - including 11 at Group 1 - passed away at his home in Kelvinside in New South Wales, Godolphin said.

'Lonhro had a huge and well-earned following, and he earnt the admiration and respect of everyone within our Godolphin teams over his years as a Darley Stallion and in his retirement,' Godolphin Australia's corporate director Ross Cole said.

'We were honoured to have him as part of our operation.'

Lonhro, one of Australia's most popular horses, has died aged 25. Darren Beadman is pictured riding him to victory in 2004

Among Lonhro's victories were two Caulfield Stakes and two George Ryder Stakes, as well as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Caulfied Guineas and an Australian Cup, to name but a few.

Darren Beadman rode the stallion to victory in that Australian Cup.

'People still approach me in 2024 to discuss the Australian Cup, it's a testament to how he captured so many people's imagination, which speaks volumes about his career,' he said.

'It's a very sad day. It was a shock when Ross [Cole] rang and told me. It brought a tear to my eye.

'It's a very, very sad day, but we must reflect on what he has achieved.'

Lonhro was the son of Octagonal, who won the Cox Plate and Australian Cup.
