French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the Iranian air attack on Israel, saying on Sunday that France was working to de-escalate the situation a few hours before meeting with the G7 group.

Iran launched an air attack on Israel Saturday with drones and missiles in response to a strike that hit the Iranian consulate in Syria on 1 April.

“I condemn in the strongest terms the unprecedented attack launched by Iran against Israel, which threatens to destabilise the region,” Macron said on X.

“France is working on de-escalation with its partners and calls for restraint”, he added.

“I express my solidarity with the Israeli people and France’s commitment to the security of Israel, our partners, and regional stability,” he added.

On Saturday, French Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the attack, accusing Tehran of “taking its destabilising actions to a new level.”

In two messages posted on X, Séjourné denounced Iran’s “unprecedented” operation and reiterated his “attachment to Israel’s security,” assuring it of his “solidarity.”

Macron and the governments of the G7 met via video conference early Sunday afternoon, where leaders “unanimously condemned Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel,” European Council President Charles Michel said at the end of the discussions, stressing that “all parties must show restraint.”
