Major city centre station evacuated just before rush hour as police act after threat

Sydney's major Central Station has been evacuated following what police believe was a hoax threat made by an anonymous caller.

The call came in on Monday afternoon at about 2.20pm, prompting authorities to evacuate passengers on the underground platform 24 and 25 travelling on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line.

Officers from the Police Transport Command commenced inquiries, but nothing was located following a search of the area.

The incident was quickly contained and trains were back to running on schedule by 3.30pm.

NSW Police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public, however inquiries remain ongoing.

Transport for NSW has warned passengers to allow extra travel time, however its understood the issue should be contained before the peak hour rush.
