A 40-year-old man has died in hospital after collapsing at the Great Manchester Run.

The man is understood to have received medical treatment after falling ill at Sunday's race before he was taken to hopsital, where he later died.

Tributes have been pouring in since the news of the tragic death broke, with the event organisers from the Great Run Company offering their 'heartfelt condolences to the participant's family and friends'.

The man, who has not yet been named, was reportedly taking part in the half-marathon race at the event - which also had a 10k run - when he collapsed.

An estimated 30,000 people took to the streets of Manchester as part of the event.

The Great Manchester Run, which was broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, first started as a 10k race in 2003 before the half-marathon version was added in 2017.

The race began on Portland Street and ended on Deansgate with runners passing by the city's iconic Old Trafford stadium.
