Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to seal a sensational return to Manchester United as part of Erik ten Hag's coaching staff this summer, according to reports.

Van Nistelrooy, who took charge of PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands between 2022 and 2023, is said to be locked in talks over an Old Trafford comeback.

United are likely to shake up Ten Hag's backroom team ahead of pre-season after deciding to keep him in charge following an end-of-season review - and club legend Van Nistelrooy has been identified as a potential assistant coach.

Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad (AD) have claimed that there is enthusiasm over a deal from both parties with Van Nistelrooy expected to sign a long-term contract.

Since stepping down as PSV manager, citing a lack of support from the board, Van Nistelrooy has held discussions with several clubs over becoming their head coach.

Indeed, Burnley, Club Brugge and other teams in Germany and Spain are thought to have swooped for the Red Devils great - although they are now set to miss out.

AD add that Van Nistelrooy is relishing the looming challenge at United.

Appointing the 47-year-old would represent a significant statement from INEOS with the United hierarchy keen to stamp their own identity on the style of play.

Van Nistelrooy spent four years at United, scoring 150 goals in 217 games. He also won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Community Shield.

He impressed during his two years in charge at PSV, having helped the club lift the KNVB Cup in 2023 and finished his tenure with a 65 per cent win percentage.

His surprise United return - which has developed quickly over recent days - is likely to raise questions over the future of several of Ten Hag's other coaches, however.

Benni McCarthy, who led the coaching of United's forwards, is out of contract next month and there has been no movement from the club over an extension.

Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McLaren have been Ten Hag's deputies since his appointment while Eric Ramsey departed for Minnesota United earlier this year.

Ten Hag is in talks with United over a new deal after being asked to remain in his post while holidaying in Ibiza - but an agreement has not yet been reached.

Any potential coaching appointment at the club is likely to be completed before their squad returns for their pre-season campaign next month.

United have declined to comment, insisting Ten Hag's extension is their priority.
