Manchester United remain locked in talks with Lazio over a deal worth up to £40million for Mason Greenwood.

Mail Sport revealed last week that United had opened negotiations with the Rome-based club for Greenwood who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain.

Lazio, who were also keen on signing Greenwood last summer, have made another move after seeing him score eight goals and six assists for Getafe.

It’s understood that the deal is the most advanced of any that could see players leaving Old Trafford this summer. United would prefer a permanent deal, however it may involve another loan with an obligation for Lazio to buy at the end of the season for a fee of around £30m rising closer to £40m with add-ons.

Greenwood has also attracted interest from Lazio’s Serie A rivals Juventus and Napoli, as well as clubs in Germany and Spain, after United decided the 22-year-old forward had no future at Old Trafford despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping charges of attempted rape and assault against him last year.

United have also put a £40m price tag on Jadon Sancho, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag and is available this summer.

Again, United would prefer to sell but another loan deal is a possibility amid interest from Juventus.

United will listen to offers for all but a handful of their players this summer as they try to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, having already allowed Raphael Varane, Antony Martial and Brandon Williams to leave at the end of their contracts.

Casemiro is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia as United try to move his £375,000-a-week earnings off the wage bill, while Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have emerged as targets for Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

The club want to keep Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes but may be forced to reconsider if a big offer comes in. The same applies to Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.

McTominay is beginning a three-week holiday after Scotland were knocked out of the Euros, but United’s non-international players are due to report back at Carrington for pre-season in a fortnight.
