Manchester United are set to appoint Matt Johnson as their new head of women’s football when Polly Bancroft departs at the end of the season.
Johnson is currently director of operations at the Manchester United Foundation and was previously performance director for the girls’ talent club.
It was announced in February that Bancroft would leave her role, which she took up in October 2022, to join League Two side Grimsby Town at the end of the season.
Johnson is highly thought of at United and Mail Sport understands that one of the main reasons he has been given the role is because of his excellent communication skills.
Mail Sport previously reported that new owners INEOS are planning an overhaul of the women’s department and Johnson’s appointment will be their first big move.

It is also understood that the club believe he will be able to better connect the academy with the first team due to his extensive experience working in youth football.
Johnson was previously technical director at Blackburn Rovers’ Girls Centre of Excellence and will aim to improve the links between the U21s and senior players.
Mail Sport also understands that talks with manager Marc Skinner over a new contract remain on-going.
Skinner’s deal expires at the end of the season and has come under pressure from fans due to the club’s struggles on the pitch.
