Man United have returned with a second bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite of £45million plus a further £5m in add ons.

United have made their move as Mason Greenwood's transfer to Marseille progresses in a deal worth £27m plus a sizeable sell on.

United had an opening offer for Branthwaite of £38m plus £5m in add ons rejected by Everton last month who value the 21-year old at close to £75m.

The Goodison club are likely to reject the latest offer but the latest bid could unsettle Branthwaite who is understood to be interested in the prospect of talking to United if the clubs can reach a compromise.

Branthwaite's failure to make Gareth Southgate's final 26-man England squad for Euro 2024 has meant he is able to negotiate his future without fear of European competition getting in the way.

United are looking to rebuild this summer after it was confirmed that Erik ten Hag would be staying on as manager under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

They are in the market for a central defender, and have earmarked Branthwaite as an option, with the highly-rated defender able to earn struggling Everton a hefty sum to help them off-the-pitch if he does leave.

Everton have been determined to hold on to the centre back while United have maintained a hope that the Toffees would drop their valuation.

The Toffees have put a £70million price tag on the 21-year-old, believing that a fee similar to the £80m United previously forked out for Harry Maguire is closer to their valuation.

United remain in talks to bring in Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and Matthias de Ligt from Bayern Munich. They also admire Paris St Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte but also need to sell to balance their books.
