Marc Guehi completed England’s win over Slovakia with a painful shoulder injury that required an injection at half-time.
The Crystal Palace defender suffered the problem in the first half, with the issue causing him immense pain as he received lengthy treatment on the field.
But Guehi was determined to see the game out and managed to complete the full 120 minutes despite being in major discomfort.
Guehi picked up his second booking of the tournament after trying to compensate for Kieran Trippier’s underhit pass, meaning he is suspended for Saturday’s quarter-final against Switzerland in Dusseldorf. Guehi twisted his shoulder in a collision with Slovakia forward David Strelec and would have been a doubt to face the Swiss were he not suspended, but there is hope he will be fit enough to return for a possible semi-final in Dortmund next week.
The race is on to replace Guehi in the team for the quarters with Ezri Konsa, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez among the contenders to play alongside John Stones in the centre of defence.
Konsa declared himself ready to step in, having come off the bench at left back against Slovakia. ‘I’m always ready,’ said the Aston Villa man. ‘When the gaffer wants to play me, wherever he wants to play, I will step in.’

Stones and Trippier are confident they will overcome fitness issues to be fit for Saturday. Stones left the Veltins Arena with strapping on his right knee on Sunday, but said he would be ‘fine’ for the next game. Trippier was taken off in the 66th minute after taking a whack on his knee, but also expects to be OK.
‘I think it was a really bad tackle, to be honest,’ said Trippier. ‘The knee is a little bit sore. I think I’ll be fine (for Saturday).’
