Rio Ferdinand has questioned the decision to bench Marcus Rashford for Manchester United's away game at Chelsea on Thursday night.

Rashford was omitted from Erik ten Hag's starting line-up at Stamford Bridge, with Antony stepping into the opening 11.

Speaking to TNT, Ferdinand believes that it might not be the right call, as Man United seek to pick up as many points as they can in the hunt for a potential Champions League spot.

Ferdinand said: 'Yeah. There's been a lot of debate about who should be playing who shouldn't.

'Marcus Rashford has been a talisman at this football club for a number of years now.

Rio Ferdinand questioned whether it was the right call to leave Rashford on the subs bench

'I'm here and behind the scenes, and maybe a little bit of a knock. We have injuries, but at the same time, when I look at it, you've got two other players against a big team the big six this year.

'The top goal scorers against the big six are both on the bench today. [Scott] McTominay and Marcus Rashford. Rashford has three, McTominay two.

'I can see why maybe you might have done it, but at the same time, when you think about big games, big moments, against Man City the other day, when you're looking for a moment from one of the players, Marcus Rashford stepped up.'

Rashford's replacement Antony gave away the penalty for Chelsea to go 2-0 up over the Red Devils inside the first 20 minutes.
