A Mariachi rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner had fans split ahead of Canelo Alvarez's Cinco de Mayo eve showdown with Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.
Ahead of the undisputed middleweight title bout between two of Mexico's finest in Las Vegas, the organizers stayed true to their country's heritage by having a Mariachi play the US national anthem.
The trio of Brenden Perez, Ramiro Oseguera, and Daniel Ochoa played the anthem without vocals. A bass and guitar accompanied while a violin played the melody.
The rendition had fans split, with most X users who joined the discussion appearing thrilled about the unique version.
'Did a Mariachi band just do the best USA national anthem I’ve ever heard at a sporting event?' one user wrote.
A Mariachi rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner was performed ahead of Canelo Alvarez 's Cinco de Mayo eve showdown with Jaime Munguia on Saturday night
Some social media users slammed the version, branding it 'pure mockery'
'Idk about y'all, but that mariachi rendition of the US national anthem was pretty cool,' another added.
However, others, while seemingly fans of the rendition themselves, appeared to suggest some Americans would be less than impressed with hearing their national anthem performed in that style.
'We are getting a mariachi version of the US National Anthem,' another added. 'It's getting a roar of approval here. I dig it, but it may be triggering for some LOL.'
'Somewhere some MAGA proud boy is losing his s**t at the mariachi national anthem at the Canelo fight, I love it,' a third chimed in.
'Somebody check on white people, they just performed the United States national anthem using a mariachi, by the way it was fire. #CaneloMunguia,' another chimed in.
Meanwhile, another posted: 'Watching the #CaneloMungia intro and out of nowhere the American National anthem was played me Mexican Mariachi… and that s*** slaaaaaapppedd. check on you local white friends yall.'
However, others proved to be fans of the version, while some remained split
On the contrary, others were not impressed, with one fan writing, 'Yes lol WTF was this.'
'F*** that mariachi Star Spangled Banner,' one social media user fumed. 'I love Mexico and Mexican people but that rendition was pure mockery.
'You’d never hear something like Charlie Daniels playing the Mexican National Anthem with a fiddle or some s***. #CaneloMunguia.'
'Yo wtf was that US national anthem mariachi style?' another disagreed.
Many were not impressed, with other seemingly surprised or shocked
Alvarez went on to hold off his feisty challenger, proving to be the stronger and more effective boxer to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship, winning by unanimous decision to hand Munguia his first loss.
Tim Cheatham scored the fight 117-110, David Sutherland had it 116-111 and Steve Weisfeld 115-112.
Alvarez (61-2-2) overcame a somewhat slow start to dominate Munguia (43-1) before a crowd of 17,492. The champ took full control after knocking down Munguia in the fourth round.
The lead-up to the bout was unusually polite, with both fighters saying they were proud to represent Mexico on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
