Sam Kerr has left soccer fans salivating after posting an image on Instagram showing her wearing football boots.

The photo has fuelled speculation the Matildas captain, 30, could in fact feature on the pitch at the Paris Olympics in July despite rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee back in January.

Adding to the intrigue was a separate Instagram story from the Matildas on Thursday, which declared a 'huge announcement' is pending, with all to be revealed on Channel 10's The Project from 6.30pm AEDT.

The Chelsea striker ruptured her ACL while on a training camp in Morocco in early January, seemingly ruling her out of the Olympics.

The photo has fuelled speculation the Matildas captain, 30, could in feature on the pitch at the Paris Olympics in what would be a miraculous recovery

Adding to the intrigue was an Instagram story from the Matildas, which declared a 'huge announcement' is pending, with all to be revealed on Channel 10's The Project on Thursday

At the time, her father Roger Kerr spoke for many football supporters when he said it was 'sad news.'

'It was pretty disappointing, upsetting, so we [have] had a couple of restless nights,' he said.

'I think she's a bit numb. 'She had a sort of injured World Cup and now we were all looking forward and Australia was looking forward to the Olympics....it's sad news.'

Typically, it takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL - but professional athletes often take longer to get their strength and fitness back up to speed.

Despite the recent social media tease, that means Kerr would have to defy medical history to have any chance of playing for the Matildas in Paris.

There have been some left-field possibilities suggested, like carrying Kerr on the bench and possibly throwing her into the fray for a brief cameo if Australia makes the medal rounds.

In a recent interview, Kerr conceded she is unlikely to feature at the Games - but refused to rule out the possibility of playing.

'Realistically, the Olympics probably isn't there but I'm still trying to push to get there as soon as I can,' she told Vogue magazine.

'It's probably a bit too soon [for the Olympics] but I'm pushing every day to be as strong as I can, as fit as I can and get back to playing my best football.'

Kerr is almost certain to miss out on the Paris Olympics through injury - but the key word is 'almost' after she refused to completely rule out playing at the Games

Kerr has entered a not guilty plea, with a criminal trial set for February next year

Away from football, Kerr stands accused of allegedly racially harassing a police officer during a boozy night out in London in January of 2023.

The Mail exclusively revealed the 30-year-old was charged and entered a not guilty plea on March 4 this year, with a four-day criminal trial set for February 2025.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that the incident, which took place on January 30, 2023, was sparked by a dispute over a taxi fare before Kerr allegedly used insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to the officer.
